After you allow microphone access, the browser reads local frames, rejects weak sound, and estimates waveform period. It maps that estimate to the nearest note using the selected A4 reference. A median steadies the live display; it is not laboratory calibration or recorded audio.
After microphone permission, the page reads 4096-sample time-domain frames from an AnalyserNode in the current browser. It downsamples toward 12 kHz, removes average offset, rejects weak frames, and evaluates repeating periods from roughly 40 to 1600 Hz with normalized autocorrelation. A candidate must clear a 0.65 clarity gate. The nearest equal-temperament MIDI note uses the selected A4 reference (432–448 Hz); cents are 1200 × log2(measured frequency ÷ reference frequency). A median of up to five readings steadies the display. Stop Tuner and page exit stop the microphone stream; it is neither recorded nor sent to Music Tools Lab.
The page analyzes only the microphone stream you explicitly permit in this browser. It reports an estimated nearest note and cents relation from short live frames; it does not record the microphone, upload sound, identify the instrument, or promise a professional calibration standard.
A chromatic view helps musicians tune before practice, compare with an ensemble reference, check a string without an app, and move into metronome practice. Instrument targets keep the intended open-string note visible while chromatic mode reports what the microphone hears.

Let one note speak long enough for the meter to settle, then make small adjustments. A negative cents value is flat and a positive value is sharp relative to the nearest note or selected target. In tune begins within five cents: a practical browser cue, not a universal tolerance. For intonation work, tune open strings first, then compare positions and use your ear in context.

Chromatic mode identifies the nearest twelve-tone note. A target button measures against one intended open string, useful when a harmonic confuses the reading. It does not force detection: if the displayed note is far away, return to Auto and confirm the string you plucked.
Use the same A4 reference for every note you tune, play one sustained sound at a time, and wait for the cents meter to settle before moving a peg, slide, embouchure, or tuning control. The center value is useful only relative to the selected reference and the particular note you are checking. Write down an alternate reference or target tuning when you need to reproduce it later.
A browser microphone can hear room reflections, neighboring instruments, and strong harmonics as well as the note you intended. Tune the open strings or primary notes first in a quiet space, then test the musical context by ear. The live reading helps find a target; it does not replace a contact pickup, technician, or ensemble listening check when intonation and stage reliability matter.
Choose Guitar standard, select the A2 target, pluck only that string, and let it ring. If the meter reads −14 cents, the string is flat relative to the selected A4 reference and should be raised slowly. When the meter settles near 0 cents and the status reads In tune, repeat for the remaining strings. Use Auto when you want the tuner to choose the nearest note itself.
This browser tuner works best with one sustained, clean pitch near the microphone. Chords, room noise, short attacks, distorted signals, weak low notes, Bluetooth latency, and backgrounded tabs can make it jump. It does not identify an instrument, measure fretboard intonation, replace a contact pickup, or promise calibration accuracy.
Return to Auto mode, use a quieter space and compare the displayed note with what you played before trusting an optional string target or adjusting an instrument.
