What Is BPM in Music? A Practical Guide to Beats Per Minute

BPM, short for beats per minute, describes how often a chosen musical beat occurs in one minute. The arithmetic is simple; deciding which pulse counts as the beat can be less obvious. A 120 BPM dance track may present a clear four-on-the-floor pulse, while a syncopated song, a live recording, or music with a half-time feel can support more than one sensible count. This guide explains both the number and the musical judgment behind it, so you can use BPM without mistaking it for a complete description of a song.
